It’s part of a recently adopted strategic plan that includes other expansions, most notably a Cardiac Cath Lab, as well as other new technologies and equipment.

Patients benefit from bedside computers, part of a unique hard-wired system known as the Pyxis PatientStation®. Touch-screen technology makes it easy for them to surf the Internet, send and receive e-mails, play computer games, watch their favorite TV shows and listen to the radio. The Pyxis system’s more serious side encompasses patient education, facility and service evaluation tools, and tools for physicians.

Mammography Services
Sheila R. Veloz Breast Imaging Center
23929 McBean Parkway,
Valencia 253-8822
The Sheila R. Veloz Breast Imaging Center is the only center of its kind in the Santa Clarita Valley. It plays an integral role in meeting Henry Mayo's mission to improve the health of the community with compassion and excellence in health-care services. The center boasts expertise in cancer detection services, including the latest in digital technology for mammograms, highly skilled medical and technical professionals, and input and collegial consultancy from the area's leading oncologists and other medical specialists. In addition to both digital and conventional mammography equipment, the center has technologists proficient in ultrasound and stereotactic biopsy procedures, along with fine needle aspiration detection. The center recently added a new computer-aided detection (CAD) system that improves the process of mammography screening by highlighting subtle types of changes in tissues that human eyes might miss.

The breast-imaging center is designed with the patient’s physical and emotional needs in mind. Its professionals continually solicit feedback from cancer survivors and family members about everything from customer service to interior design. The atmosphere is sophisticated, comfortable and peaceful while being highly attentive to patients’ needs.

An important goal of the center is to make it easier and more convenient for women to get annual mammograms and reduce the anxiety associated with breast cancer detection. Processing of digital images is faster than conventional film processing, reducing the need for additional appointments and extra mammograms. Saturday and evening appointments are available to accommodate even the busiest schedules.

Created as a result of the collective experiences of survivors, patients and their families, the center also focuses on patient self-examination, local cancer support groups, healthy living, and options for care and treatment.

Acute Rehabilitation Unit
Pavilion Building
25727 McBean Parkway,
Valencia 253-8800
Henry Mayo’s 19-bed Acute Rehabilitation Center (ARU) serves patients with orthopedic, neurological and complex medical conditions. Known for a caring and progressive focus on rehabilitation, the ARU is the place to heal, the place where patients go for the hope, confidence and treatment needed to face changes in their lives. Every aspect of the center has been specially designed for rehabilitation. Patient rooms are adjacent to therapy areas and two gymnasiums designed for physical therapy and occupational therapy.

The center features activities of daily living that simulate a home environment, complete with a full kitchen and dining area that allow patients to practice their newly learned skills. Outdoor skills such as gardening also are practiced. Social dining is encouraged on a daily basis. Patients can come together for two to three meals each day to socialize with other patients, family members and friends. Nursing staff or therapists supervise meals and help with feeding if needed.

During a patient’s first few days in the ARU, an interdisciplinary team meets with the patient and studies his or her needs. Once individual needs are determined, a personalized rehabilitation plan of care begins. All patients participate in therapy for a minimum of three hours each day. Nursing care, support from psychology, respiratory therapy, dietary and social services along with team and family conferences also are part of the plan. In their final steps as they prepare to leave the hospital, patients are taken on a field trip where they learn to maneuver over sidewalks and through shopping centers and are given exercises simulating everyday living experiences. If needed, patients receive a home-safety evaluation.

Behavioral Health Services
Behavioral Health Unit
25727 McBean Parkway,
Valencia 253-8989
Henry Mayo’s Behavioral Health Unit is committed to providing safe, comfortable and high-quality care for patients experiencing acute psychological distress. An interdisciplinary program is designed to meet the needs of adults who require intensive treatment in the security of an inpatient facility. Whether they require care on a one-time or ongoing basis, the hospital’s goal is to help patients reduce their symptoms and develop the tools and skills they need to effectively function and maintain healthy, productive lives.

The 23-bed Behavioral Health Unit treats a wide range of acute psychiatric illnesses, including major depression, bipolar disorder, schizoaffective disorder and schizophrenia. Services include: Assessment of emotional and psychological issues, initial health screening, case management, medication management, treatment planning, community integration planning and referrals.

Every patient in the Behavioral Health Unit receives an individualized treatment plan that best meets his or her needs. The plan includes a multi-faceted approach to recovery and symptom management, including:

• Group psychotherapy
• Recreational and cognitive therapy
• Relationship skills
• Art therapy
• Communication skills
• Stress management
• Health and wellness awareness
• Time management
• Symptom and anger management
• Medication education
• Goal setting

The unit provides patients with maximum exposure to scheduled therapy and educational groups, as well as recreational and activity groups throughout the day. In addition, a registered dietitian consults on patient meal planning. The 30-member staff is among the most experienced in the behavioral health profession. Psychiatrists, psychotherapists, psychiatric-certified RNs, licensed psych techs, social workers, activity therapists and mental health workers are involved 24 hours a day.

Wound Care Center
Information 253-8458
Henry Mayo’s Wound Care Center, which opened in late 2003, is affiliated with Curative Health Services, the nation's leader in the treatment of hard-to-heal wounds. Although most people’s small wounds heal in time, some adults have wounds that simply won’t heal, despite their own diligence and repeated trips to the doctor. The most frequent causes of chronic non-healing wounds (ulcers) are immobility (the “bedsore”), diabetic nerve damage, venous insufficiency and other circulatory disorders. The best care for patients with chronic wounds comes from a systematic approach – thorough assessment, proper wound cleaning, removal of infected tissue, new-age dressings and medications, and much more. Such an approach is well documented and has been extremely successful at Curative Health Services Wound Management Programs across the nation for more than a decade. Nutrition, prevention and education also play key roles in the treatment plan, which is individualized for each patient.

Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Health Foundation
Information 253-8082
The Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Health Foundation raises funds for the hospital’s capital needs, supports many community-hospital partnerships, and fosters volunteerism and positive awareness of the hospital. The foundation brings together caring professionals and citizens of the Santa Clarita Valley to help make a difference in local health care. Funds are raised through annual gifts and a variety of events held through the year. These include the Frontier Toyota/Henry Mayo Drive Safe Golf Classic, the Good Neighbor Pharmacy/Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Health Foundation 5k “Run for the Health of It,” the annual Community Tree Lighting and the Gift of Life Program.

Annual gifts raised by the foundation through its Corporate Partners program provide support each year for vital hospital services.

Volunteer support and fundraising activities improve the hospital's ability to keep pace with rapidly changing medical technology, facility renovations and the provision of life-saving services. Volunteer opportunities exist with:

  • Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital Home Tour League – The league plans an ever-popular Holiday Home Tour and Gala. Funds raised benefit women's services.
  • Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital Guild – The guild plans the Fall Fashion Show and debutante program, and runs the Guilded Rose Thrift Shop in Newhall. Guild funds benefit the hospital’s laboratory services.
  • Flame of Life Volunteers – These volunteers host frequent fundraising events. Their activities benefit Emergency/Trauma Services.
  • Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital Auxiliary – The auxiliary operates the hospital's gift shop, sponsors the blood bank, Tyke Hike, Parent Preview, Cradle Roll, baby t-shirts, newborn photos, first baby of the New Year, and tours of the hospital. Funds raised from these activities benefit the hospital’s critical care unit.

Members of the community interested in volunteer work or making a financial contribution may contact the Foundation at 253-8082.

Cancer Care
Vantage Oncology Santa Clarita Radiation Therapy Center
Located at Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital 866/964-8101
Vantage Oncology Santa Clarita Radiation Therapy Center offers residents access to one of the most advanced treatment options for cancer: the TomoTherapy Hi-Art® System. With the advent of this sophisticated technology, the war against cancer has become highly advanced with its technological capabilities and precise delivery of radiation to tumor sites. While conventional radiotherapy delivers a wide beam of radiation from a few directions, this new system combines sophisticated intensity-modulated radiotherapy with the helical delivery of radiation. Treatment planning, CT image-guided patient positioning and treatment delivery are integrated into one system. The patient lies on a couch that moves continuously through a rotating ring frame. The linear accelerator is housed in the ring frame and delivers radiation in the shape of a fan beam as the ring is turning. With the couch moving at the same time as the frame is rotating, the radiation beam makes a spiral pattern around the patient, targeting tumors with optimal levels of radiation while minimizing the dose to healthy areas.

Before beginning TomoTherapy treatment, the physician uses three-dimensional images and special software to define the precise contours for each tumor. The physician also decides how much radiation the tumor should receive, as well as acceptable levels for surrounding structures. The system calculates the appropriate pattern, position and intensity of the radiation to be delivered. “The side effects from TomoTherapy are significantly reduced compared to conventional radiation therapy,” said Dr. Robert Zimmerman, medical director of the Santa Clarita Radiation Therapy Center. “The risk of long-term complications from treatment is also dramatically lower.”
